The Handcraft Fair in Nagoya 2014: No one would recognize it as a UNIQLO product!

CAM00233     “You buy a cheap hoodie at a UNIQLO store and then add something like Tyrolean trims or something, or change the cord to a fancy one. You see, you can get an original item easily! No one would recognize it as a UNIQLO product! ” Mr. Tomoyuki Tanaka, a fashion designer, explained how to modify old or plain clothing items, showing many examples: T-shirts, hoodies, jackets, hats, bags, shoes…CAM00212

I was in Fukiage Hall last Friday with two of my friends. There was an annual event called “Handcraft Fair in Nagoya.” I attend the event every year. (The previous articles about the event: 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008) My main purpose is to buy bags from a bag designer called Yukako. She makes bags from used clothes. I like her taste. The two bags in the photo were the ones I bought this year. They are lovely, aren’t they? CAM00214

That morning, I had an English class, and my friends had a Chinese medicine class. We met at a restaurant for lunch around 1p.m. All of us were tired and sleepy when we arrived at the place at about 3. We bought some coffee and slumped on to chairs in front of the stage. We did not have stamina for walking around. Then, the talk show began. I was able to get many ideas for modifying clothing.

After the show, we went to the bag designer’s booth. It was difficult to choose one from her works. Every bag was appealing. I bought a big tote for Tai Chi and drum practice. I often need to bring a pair of shoes and extra clothing for Tai Chi and drum sticks and musical scores for playing the drums. The other one is for my usual outings. I met the bag maker with the one I had bought from her last year. She was very pleased to see it, as if she had met her child who was living far away from her. CAM00215

My friends each bought some automatic needle threaders made in Italy and wooden clogs. All of us were happy to get what we had wanted. Whenever I come to the event, I am surprised and impressed by many fancywork devotees. I have not made anything by myself for a long time, but the event gave me many hints about modifying this year. According to Mr. Tanaka, you can get many items for modifying at 100 yen shops or hobby stores. I cannot make a bag from old clothes like Yukako, but I might be able to decorate my old bags and to perk them up!

Handicraft Fair in Nagoya 2012: Shouldn’t I have bought this from you?

CAM00017      “Ah…Can I see the bag one last time? Oh…Oh…” The bag maker said that and stared at “my” bag fondly and sadly. There is an event called Handicraft Fair in Fukiage Hall every June and I look forward to buy a bag from Yukako, the bag maker, at her booth each year. I just bought the bag from her.

So, I asked her, “Um…Shouldn’t I have bought this from you?” She replied hastily, “Oh, yes, yes! I’m very happy to sell the bag, but it took really a long time and very hard for me to complete it. I may not be able to create a better one than that…Please take good care of it…” She almost started to cry. I promised her to visit her booth with the bag next year.   CAM00010_2

I see her have made every effort to make the bag, which is an achievement of her painstaking craftsmanship. Now this bag is my favorite. It was about four years ago when I met her and her bags for the first time at the event. I remembered I was very surprised at her works and liked them instantly at that time. I have bought one bag every year since then. It has become my main purpose to visit her booth and to purchase a bag there at the annual event. CAM00016

There are more than 150 companies and creators at Handicraft Fair every time. According to the organizer, the event gathers about 30,000 people. You can buy materials such as fabric and yean balls and handicrafts, and try to make something with instructors. So, many people including children were enjoying doing fancywork and shopping this year, too. I walked and looked around the booths and bought two pieces of cloth there. I wonder what I shall make with them… CAM00111

I felt fulfilled by getting a wonderful bag and seeing many interesting things and happy people at the event. Why don’t you go to Handicraft Fair with me next year?

Handcraft Fair in Nagoya 2011: Can you find the enchanted bag shop?

TS3N1146      “Gotcha! What a nice bag! Yeah, of course! Cause I made it!” She said that approaching with a smile.

There was an annual event named Handcraft Fair in Fukiage, Nagoya at the end of June. I was waiting for her, the bag maker, at her booth. I found it out from more than 150 booths at last when she was not there. A woman next booth called out to and told me that she was coming back soon. So, I was looking at her new bags on the wall while waiting. TS3N1145

I turned around and saw her smiling at me. “Long time no see! I can’t believe one year has already passed since I bought this bag from you! I’m bringing it to show you. I really like it!” I said that when she beamed. She remembered when we had met at her booth last year and told me my t-shirt I had worn at that time would transform wonderful bags. TS3N1144

While we were talking, the bag maker’s booth was filled with ladies. One of them asked her since when she had begun having a booth at the event. She replied, “Well…this is the fourth year, I think.” I was surprised to the answer because I thought she started last year. I hadn’t been able to find or see her booth until last year in spite of that I came to the event more than five times. In fact, the lady who asked to her was also surprised because it was the first time to find her booth in her over ten-time participations in the event. So, we talked this booth might be enchanted and chosen people could find it. Yeah, her bags are really awesome! She must make them with some magic!TS3N1186

Look at these lovely bags! I bought the two of them this year because I don’t know when and where I can see her bags next time. She doesn’t have a shop or consign her works or sell them online. I really like my bags and admire her talent. I’m looking forward to see her and her new works at Handcraft Fair next year. But I’m wondering if I can find her magical booth next time, too…
